YOUR CASE
It was a dark and stormy night when Rowan Merrilee, the Tees boatman and champion homebrewer, overturned in his canoe and sank to the bottom of the river. The next morning a tatty old map was found floating on the surface. The map, together with clues hidden in villages along the river, leads to the location of the secret recipe of his prize-winning turnip ale. Can you solve the clues and find the hiding place?
Hurworth-on-Tees to Egglescliffe
This treasure hunt driving or cycling Trail follows a route through rich, wooded farmland along the River Tees. As you drive you'll discover pretty villages to explore. In each village you'll be directed to a parking place where you can leave your car and search for clues on foot.
The villages you'll explore are Hurworth-on-Tees, Neasham, Middleton One Row and Egglescliffe. There are some great pubs to visit along the way including the Otter and Fish and the Bay Horse in Hurworth, the Fox and Hounds in Neasham, the Devonport in Middleton One Row and the Pot and Glass in Egglescliffe. It's up to you which one you choose for lunch en-route!
You'll also be following a short section of the Teesdale Way on this Trail.
We recommend wearing strong outdoor shoes for this Trail as it can be muddy in places.
The Trail is 11 miles of driving, with a combined walking distance of 3 miles exploring the villages. Unfortunately this Trail is not suitable for wheelchair users or pushchairs because of a narrow path in Hurworth, two stiles and a series of steps in Neasham. There is room under the stiles for dogs to pass.
