YOUR MISSION
It's 1943 and Britain is at war with Germany. You've been sent to Hartlepool as a code-breaker to translate messages from German spies and their warships. On your first day you intercept a message to a German spy. He has been sent a set of clues leading to a secret code - a code that will detonate a bomb. The clues are hidden around the Headland. Can you discover the code and deactivate the bomb before the spy can trigger it?
Hartlepool Historic Headland
This is a spy mission walking Trail around Hartlepool's Headland. The route is 2 miles and it will take you around two hours to complete.
This is a fascinating Trail exploring the history of the Headland. It's a tumultuous history stretching back through time for over 1000 years. You'll find out about invaders including the Vikings, French spies (or a monkey?) and German warships.
You'll also enjoy a great walk along the seafront, with opportunities for rock-pooling and exploring the beach when the tide is out.
The route also passes St Hilda's Church and visitor centre, which is open on afternoons at weekends and on Wednesdays. If you'd like to find out more about wartime on the Headland, you can visit the Heugh Battery Museum along the route. It's open Thursday - Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays.
There are toilets at the start, middle and end of the Trail. The car park is free, and you'll find a fish and chip shop and pub serving food nearby.
The Trail is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
