YOUR MISSION
Frosti Grimursson, fiendish ice giant from the frozen north, has arrived back on the Durham Coast after an absence of 10,000 years. He plans to re-fill the denes with ice using his new invention, the glacier crunching ice grater. The only way to stop him is to use Professor Pickles' ice-cream machine to turn the ice into thousands of raspberry sorbets, but the absent-minded professor has lost the code to activate it! Can you solve the clues to work out the code?
Crimdon Dene, Dunes and Beach
Crimdon Dene is a wooded valley cutting through cliffs of Magnesian limestone down to a pebbly beach. It’s situated at the southernmost point of a stretch of coastline known as the Durham Heritage Coast. There are directions within the Trail to find it.
The Trail starts at the car park on the cliffs where there are good views south across the mouth of the Tees. You can see as far as Saltburn-by-the-Sea and the North Yorkshire coast.
As you follow the route, you’ll find yourself passing through contrasting areas of beach, sand dunes and woodland. The dene, dunes and beach are known for being a peaceful place for walking, with interesting geology and plentiful wildlife. During the summer, you’ll see and hear a nesting colony of Little Terns, one of our rarest seabirds.
This Trail is 1.5 miles in length and will take you around one and a half hours to complete.
Unfortunately due to the stepped boardwalks and sand it’s not suitable for wheelchairs and would be very difficult for pushchairs.
As Crimdon Dene is in a rural location, we recommend taking your own picnic or refreshments. Unfortunately, the toilets are currently unavailable, but there are plenty of bushes! The centre of Hartlepool is only 3.5 miles away.
