YOUR CASE
The townspeople of Barnard Castle are getting ready for a fabulous French feast. Most of the dishes are ready, but the Patissier, who is making the sweets and pastries, is panicking. The artisan chocolate, a Chocolat Superieur, has not arrived! It's needed to make the eclairs and Grand Gateau, but has been delivered to the wrong place! Can you help the Patissier by solving the clues to discover the location of the chocolate?
Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a vibrant, rural market town in Teesdale, one of the Durham Dales in the North Pennines. The town, called ‘Barney’ by its residents, is well known for interesting and varied shopping opportunities, including antique shops and galleries.
Did you know there is a French chateau in the Durham countryside at Barnard Castle? The Bowes Museum is a stunning historic building filled with internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts. It was built in the 1860’s by a Parisian actress called Josephine Coffin-Chevallier and her husband John Bowes of Gibside and Streatlam, son of the 10th Earl of Strathmore.
Barney is named after its castle which dates back to Norman times and was built by Bernard de Balliol. The Trail starts just outside the castle and follows its walls, giving you a chance to appreciate its architecture and position above the River Wear. As you continue on the Trail you’ll also discover a play area, the Demesnes with great views across the town and of course, the Bowes Museum.
There are many places to choose from for refreshments along the Trail. The Bowes Museum has its own café, and there are many other excellent cafes, tea-rooms and pubs along the route. Near the end of the Trail you'll find a shop called 'Chocolate Fayre'. A visit there will complete your experience!
This Trail is 1.3 miles long and will take you one hour to complete. It is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs although the first part alongside the castle walls does go steeply downhill for a short while.

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
The treasure hunt was great - something I could do with all 3 children as they are different ages and pushchair friendly. This treasure hunt was easy reading for the children and easy to follow. It kept the children occupied for a couple of hours without costing a fortune. Would love to do another thanks!
