Sandy, the Missing Mermaid - A Treasure Hunt Adventure for the Whole Family

For nearly 100 years, sand sculptures have been a beloved part of Weymouth. Legend has it that the first sculpture, a stunning mermaid named Sandy Scales, came to life and disappeared into the sea one night. She now protects a trove of precious gems collected by her sculptor, Shay Pitt.

But with a grand Sand Festival coming to town, Bryony Sea is determined to find Sandy and bring her back home. Armed with a map and set of clever clues, she has tasked the Exploration Society with a quest. Now, it's up to YOU-our top adventurers-to crack the clues and seek out Sandy and the gems.

Treasure Hunt Through Weymouth - Esplanade & Gardens

Looking for a fun day out with family and friends or a memorable adventure with the kids? Look no further than this self-guided Treasure Hunt through Weymouth. As you follow the circular route, you'll explore the Pavilion and Gardens on the seafront, diverting to see where Thomas Hardy wrote his first novel and discovering sneaky clues in Greenhill Gardens.

The Outdoor Escape Room is open… Can YOU find Sandy and uncover the hidden gems?

What is a Treasure Trail?

Before You Set Off

PLEASE NOTE - This Trail used to be called Weymouth Seafront and then Weymouth Pavilion & Gardens before undergoing a major rewrite in February 2026.

Before you set off on your Intrepid Explorer Society quest along Weymouth’s Esplanade and Greenhill Gardens, here are a few handy tips…

Easy to Navigate – This circular expedition follows Weymouth’s seafront pavements and well-kept garden paths, making it a great choice for families, pushchairs and wheelchair users. The route is mostly flat, with plenty of benches and pause-points for explorers who prefer their adventures with regular refuelling stops.

Bring Your Furry Sidekicks – Four-legged crew members are welcome on this mission. Much of the route runs along the busy promenade and through gardens, but you’re never far from the beach and open stretches for a good sniff and a blast of sea air. Do keep an eye out for local signage, especially where seasonal beach restrictions apply.

Parking Sorted! – The quest begins outside the Pavilion Theatre on The Esplanade, with pay-and-display parking close by. There’s also a Park and Ride option available, which can be a calmer way to launch your expedition during busier periods.

Need the Loo? – Public toilets are available along the seafront, including facilities near Clue 19. There are also plenty of cafés and snack stops along the route if your explorers need a comfort break… or an emergency ice cream.

Want to Make a Day of It?

Pack a Proper Explorer’s Picnic – This Trail practically begs for a picnic. There are several ideal stopping points, and the route even encourages picnicking around the middle section of the Trail, so bring sandwiches, snacks and something celebratory for when a tricky clue finally cracks.

Garden Grazing – Greenhill Gardens make a brilliant refuelling zone, with sea views, sheltered corners and plenty of space to spread out a blanket while you study the treasure map and enjoy a well-earned rest.

Ice Cream Is Essential Research – A stop at Rossi’s is strongly recommended by the Intrepid Explorer Society. Consider it vital fieldwork for morale-boosting purposes.

Finish with Beach Time – With Weymouth Beach right on hand, it’s easy to round off your adventure with a paddle, a sandcastle session, or a relaxed victory stroll along the shore.
