Lyme Regis
The cliffs and shoreline towards Lyme Regis are one of the most popular locations for fossil hunters from around the world.
Mary Anning was the daughter of a local carpenter and a part time fossil collector. Her most famous discovery was the fossil of an Ichthyosaur, which was sold to the British Museum, and in 1824 she discovered the first complete fossil of a Plesiosaurus.
The Cobb (the harbour) dates from the 13th Century. It has long inspired artists and writers like Jane Austen. The unforgettable opening scene from the film The French Lieutenant's Woman was shot here.
Lyme Regis is part of the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site and is England's first natural World Heritage Site - The Jurassic Coast. It covers 95 miles of truly stunning coastline from East Devon to Dorset, with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth's history.
World Heritage status was achieved because of the site's unique insight into the Earth Sciences as it clearly depicts a geological ‘walk through time' spanning the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The Jurassic Coach Bus Service is available for those wishing to explore more of the beautiful Coast. More details can be found at www.jurassiccoast.com
This Treasure Trail is 1.6 miles and takes approximately 2 hours. The Trail is suitable for light pushchairs but not wheelchairs.
