  • YOUR CASE

‘Twas a dark and stormy night when One Eyed Jack, the notorious Hartland smuggler fell overboard & drowned, whilst bringing his illegal contraband ashore. One Eyed Jack had hidden the booty in a secret location, on a small island off the North Devon Coast. Unfortunately, Jack took the secret of his ill gotten gains with him to his watery grave. All that remains are some instructions and a tatty map to help you find his hidden haul.

    Hartland Peninsula

The Hartland Peninsula, tucked away in the north west corner of Devon, offers a remoteness, wildness and beauty unlike any other area, encompassing a wide variety of landscapes from secluded beaches, spectacular coastal walks, wild moorland and ancient woodland. The welcoming village of Hartland has a variety of shops, pubs and craft workshops as well as an old market town hall which boasts one of the earliest working public clocks. The coastline has seen numerous shipwrecks over the years; the lighthouse at Hartland Point was constructed to warn mariners of the dangerous cliffs along this stretch of coastline. Do allow plenty of time to enjoy the hospitality of the local communities who make up the Hartland Peninsula Association.

The trail is available for purchase from The Post Office and The Farm Shop in Hartland village, as well as the Hartland Quay Hotel and Buck's Cross Post Office.

This is a driving and walking Treasure Hunt Trail around the Hartland Peninsula. It covers around 12 miles by vehicle and 2 miles on foot. There are several suggested optional walking routes if you wish to extend your visit. See the booklet enclosed with the printed copy of each trail or visit www.hartlandpeninsula.co.uk for further details. The Trail is suitable for light pushchairs but regrettably not wheelchairs, due to the rugged terrain. Please be aware that the lanes are narrow in places and can be muddy at times!

    WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
Despite it being a chilly afternoon in late November where we didn't linger to enjoy the fabulous scenery, my husband, children (aged 16 - 9), dog and I enjoyed our Treasure Trail, finding some of the clues straightforward and others rather more taxing.

The variety of walking and driving, town and seascape, was excellent - the driving occurred just as we were beginning to feel cold, which was great! Although I have lived in the area for three months, it is still relatively new to me, so I visited places I hadn't yet seen and learned some local facts along the way.

On a warm day there would be plenty of opportunity to explore off trail a little because there are some spectacular sea views, and the trail makes suggestions for further exploration, to really make a day of it. I'd suggest taking a picnic for that very purpose. Everywhere we stopped had free parking, and once out of the village, there was some stunning rural and coastal scenery, for which the Hartland Peninsula is renowned, with excellent photo opportunities.

I'd recommend a trail for families because solving clues and having a mystery to uncover adds interest, purpose and mystery. This was a well-prepared and planned trail with excellent directions. I'd like to try others.
