YOUR QUEST

It was a cold, stormy night in February 1646. With the fierce battle raging all around him, Lord Hopton, General of the King’s Army, made a quick exit from his headquarters in the Black Horse Inn in Great Torrington, leaving behind “Trunks of plate and silver and other treasure.” This treasure has never been found. Can you solve a legend spanning generations and help locate the missing treasure? If so, you may win a cash prize!

Great Torrington

The historic market town of Great Torrington sits proudly on a cliff top, deep in the heart of Tarka Country in rural North Devon, with spectacular views over the River Torridge. Great Torrington has a fascinating historical legacy from the days of the English Civil War 1642-1646, and is widely recognised for its important heritage centre for the history of the 17th Century, Torrington 1646. Great Torrington remains a colourful and vibrant community, with a wide variety of interesting shops, cafes and restaurants along with a refurbished Victorian Pannier Market accommodating craft workshops and stalls selling local produce. There are also 365 acres of common land to explore as well as a scenic stroll down to the River Torridge for the more energetic! Keep an eye out for otters, made famous by Henry Williamson in his 1927 novel “Tarka the Otter”.

This is a Treasure Hunt Trail.
