  • YOUR CASE

Local canal ranger, Tom McNally, recently uncovered an ancient treasure map buried deep within a lime kiln along the Grand Western Canal. It is believed to show the location of a little known island off the East Devon Coast, where Dick Terrapin, the notorious 18th century aquatic highwayman, buried his ill-gotten gains, robbed from canal boats all over the South West. Can you find the location of the Highwayman’s Haul?

    Grand Western Canal

The Grand Western Canal from Tiverton in mid-Devon to Lowdwells near the Somerset border, is the remains of an ambitious scheme to link the English and Bristol Channels. Easily accessible and signposted from the M5 and A361, it is in complete contrast to the hustle and bustle of urban life. The canal has become a haven for wildlife as it meanders peacefully through undulating farmland and small pockets of woodland, providing spectacular views of some of the prettiest countryside that Devon has to offer. The Canal has been designated a Country Park since 1971 and is now managed by Devon County Council. Access is free all year round (there is a charge for parking). Facilities include a small visitor centre, Tea Gardens and a floating shop/cafe, as well as the popular horse-drawn barge for those wishing to explore the canal at a more leisurely pace!

This is a Treasure Hunt Trail.
The trail is 7 miles long (one way), and can be completed on foot or by bicycle.

A bus service is available from where the trail finishes at the Globe Inn at Sampford Peverell which will take you back to Tiverton.

Care must be taken alongside the canal towpath which lies adjacent to deep water.

    WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS SAY
"My wife Gill and I really enjoyed the Grand Western Canal Cycling Trail. It encouraged us to hire bikes and partake in unaccustomed exercise with the resulting aching muscles! We so enjoyed the opportunity to cycle once more that two days later we bought a brand new bicycle each! How's that for having an effect on people! We are now looking forward somewhat eagerly for any more cycle trails that you do!"
