  • YOUR CASE

Locals were surprised to hear of the death of Freddy “Fingers” Thompson, a prisoner who was finally released from Dartmoor Prison last week after serving 53 years in jail. “Fingers” Thompson, who achieved notoriety after 27 unsuccessful attempts to escape, met a suspicious end after only five days of freedom. Can you solve the mystery of who might have wanted “Fingers” out of the way? If you can, you could win a prize!

    Dartmoor

Dartmoor is the largest open space in Southern England and this car trail gives you a chance to get a real feel for its spectacular landscapes and fascinating history. Along the way you will explore Princetown, Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Chagford, Moretonhampstead, and Lustleigh. With this Trail, you will see ancient monuments, Dartmoor ponies, Dartmoor prison, historic churches and picturesque villages all set in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Each location has its own distinct character and heritage which you will explore whilst solving the clues, following in the footsteps of famous English detective, Sherlock Holmes, whose adventures on Dartmoor are contained within Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous book, The Hound of The Baskervilles.

This is a Murder Mystery Trail which is completed by car and on foot. The total walking distance is 2 miles, driving distance is 45 miles and the approximate time is 5 hours, not including refreshment stops.

Part of the Trail is set on the moorland. The Trail is suitable for pushchairs and wheelchair users.

The Trail can also be purchased as a booklet from the Visitor Information Centres located at Princetown, Postbridge and Haytor and the Tourist Information Centre in Tavistock, which is where the trail starts.
