  • YOUR MISSION

Dr Badden-Madd, in his quest for global domination, has planted a time-shifting device along the Exeter City Wall which will, upon detonation, cause all those living within the city walls to be transported back to Roman times, with the evil genius as the brutal Baddenus Maximus and blood-thirsty gladiators as his henchmen. The good folk of Exeter need your help to find and de-activate the device, before they have to start learning Latin.

    Exeter City Wall

This fascinating trail will help you to discover Exeter's historic past as you explore within the boundaries, and beyond, of the remains of the Exeter City Wall.

Exeter was one of the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlements in Britain and was also the southern starting point for the Fosse Way Roman Road. Almost 70% of the 2000 year old City Wall structure remains.

The Trail starts at Exeter Visitor Information Centre and leads you along the City Wall, exploring Exeter Cathedral Green, St Nicholas Priory, the ruins of the medieval Exe Bridge, the Catacombs, Rougemont Gardens and Castle along the way, before finishing in Princesshay Shopping Centre, where you can enjoy well-earned refreshments at a wide selection of contemporary city centre restaurants and cafes.

This is a circular walking trail in the Spy Mission format. The Trail is approximately 2.5 miles long and takes around 2 1/2 hours to complete. There are several flights of steps along the trail and a steep cobbled descent. The trail is suitable for light pushchairs, but regrettably not for wheelchair users.

The bus station, Park and Ride drop-off points and car parking are near the start of the trail.

You can also purchase the trail as a booklet from Exeter Visitor Information Centre which is located at the start.
