  • YOUR CASE

During the 17th Century, notorious Devonshire pirate, Captain Henry Avery, aka"Long Ben", travelled far & wide, plundering ships large & small as he sailed the high seas. One dark & stormy night, Long Ben’s ship, the Salty Seadog, became marooned on a little known island, just off the Atlantic Coast, near Bideford Bay. Long Ben took the secret of his ill-gotten gains with him to his grave. All that remains is a tatty map to help you find his haul.....

    Bideford Bay

This Treasure Hunt trail will help you explore the five areas that collectively make up Bideford Bay - Atlantic Village, Bideford, Northam, Westward Ho! and Appledore. You can visit each of the five places in any order you wish, however, do allow the whole day if you intend to complete the trail in one go.

Starting at the retail shopping outlet, Atlantic Village just off the A39, the trail then takes you to the vibrant town of Bideford with its bustling quay and famous medieval bridge. Then off to explore Northam with stunning views over the Atlantic Coast; then on to Westward Ho! where you can enjoy the traditional English seaside at its best, before arriving in the pretty coastal village of Appledore with its narrow streets, craft shops and maritime history.

This is a Treasure Hunt Trail which visits the five areas of Atlantic Village, Bideford, Northam, Westward Ho! and Appledore. You can use the bus or car to travel the 8 miles between the five places. It involves a total of around 2 miles walking. We suggest you allow at least five hours if the trail is to be completed in one go.

This trail was specially written for Torridge District Council. It can be purchased from Bideford Tourist Information Centre and the Tourist Information Desk at Atlantic Village. (We advise you check opening hours first.)

Why not leave the car behind in the Long Stay Car Park at Atlantic Village and hop on the Beacon Bus 15x service to Bideford, then take either the First Bus Service 1 or 2 OR the Stagecoach service 21 or 21A, which both run frequent services around the Bideford Bay area.
