Treasure Trails Devon receives Dartmoor First Award

11/03/2011

Treasure Trails Devon have received the Dartmoor First Award in recognition of their work and commitment to sustainable tourism on Dartmoor. The award comes hot on the heels of their success in the 2010 Visit Devon Tourism Awards where they scooped the Gold Award for the Best Tourism Activity & Experience in Devon and their short-listing as finalists in Best Tourism/Hospitality business category in the inaugural Express & Echo Business Awards 2011.

Sandy Tilke
, manager of Treasure Trails Devon, based in Silverton, was presented with the award by Richard Drysdale, Sustainable Development Officer for Dartmoor National Park Authority, at the recent “Dartmoor On Your Doorstep” event in Princetown for local tourism businesses. Sandy said, “We are delighted to have been recognised for our work with the Dartmoor National Park, and in particular for our involvement in helping to promote and encourage sustainable tourism. Millions of people visit Dartmoor each year and it’s so important for us all to do what we can to help preserve and protect this special environment for future generations to enjoy.”

As well as employing normal practices associated with running an office (reduce, reuse and recycle); Treasure Trails actively work with partners such as the DNPA and the National Trust so that an increasing number of their unique themed trails are aimed at reducing car usage. Currently there are six cycling trails and three bus trails, as well as 40 walking trails among their catalogue of 48 Treasure Trails throughout Devon.

Treasure Trails worked in partnership with The Dartmoor National Park Authority to create a two bus Trails for the subsidised bus services across Dartmoor, including the popular Haytor Hoppa bus service, which promotes Bovey Tracey, Haytor, Widecombe and Manaton. Visitors to the National Park can leave the car behind and hop on the circular bus route to solve the murder mystery of “The Moggie of The Mire”, a take on the famous Sherlock Holmes story, “The Hound of The Baskervilles” which is set on Dartmoor.

Richard Drysdale, Sustainable Development Officer for the Dartmoor National Park Authority, said, “I am delighted to say that following Rod and Sandy’s application for Dartmoor First the panel have agreed that Treasure Trails are worthy recipients of the award. The application makes their commitment to sustainability and Dartmoor very evident.”

As well as promoting public transport and park and ride opportunities, Treasure Trails are an ideal all year round “Daycation” activity bringing visitors, both local and holiday makers, into each of the Trail locations as they explore with the help of the self-guided Trails which follow either a Murder Mystery, Treasure Hunt or Spy Mission format. The Trails can take anything from a couple of hours to a whole day, which undoubtedly means that the growing army of Treasure Trails fans spend money on refreshments and other incidentals whilst exploring an area. The company estimate that almost 26,000 visitors explored Devon during 2010 with the help of one of their Trails, which generated an average spend of £8.50 per person or £24.50 per typical family group.
