  • YOUR CASE

When the Romans invaded this part of Britain, they built a chariot racetrack here. A gambling centurion, Bigus Loserous, hid his winnings somewhere near the River Goyt at Whaley Bridge. The map he made to help him remember where he had hidden his gold is now entrusted to you to solve the mystery. Can you find his gold?

    Whaley Bridge

Whaley Bridge has a lot of history to it, particularly from the industrial days of the late 1800's. The canal and railway systems vied for trade from the local quarries and as a result the landscape and architecture have been affected. Today, off the main road through Whaley, the town is a quiet, tranquil area with easy access to shops and activities for a wide range of people.
There are some stunning examples of days gone by in the back streets and along the river and canal at Whaley. In fact, a short walk along the canal towpath takes you to Bugsworth Basin which surely has to be the best preserved inland port in the country. Its links to Whaley Bridge lend a neat explanation of the infrastructure that existed throughout this part of Derbyshire throughout the 1800's.
In addition, there is a secret area of Whaley, that this Trail takes you to, that will give you the most stunning view you are likely to see in this part of Derbyshire. I can't tell you more - you need to do the Trail to discover this and more!

The route is approximately one and a half miles long and will take about an hour and a half. It is predominantly along paths and roadways, with one short area along a dirt pathway that might get slightly muddy in wet weather - and also an area around the canal basin that could be muddy at times too. There are refreshment facilities throughout the town including a lovely pub that does great food at The Cock - where the Trail takes you right past.
