  • YOUR CASE

When the Spanish fleet invaded England in the 16th century, they got as far as Hayfield where they were turned back by the Hayfield militia. Before the Armada fled they hid their gold bullion in the Sett Valley. The map showing where their treasure was hidden has become available and it is your job to find the goodies, before unscrupulous crooks can get their hands on it. Here are some clues to help.

    Hayfield

Hayfield is a pretty little village with a big history within its beauty. It stands at the foot of Kinder Scout where the mass trespass of 1932 took place. 500 walkers, mostly from Manchester, made their way up Kinder Scout from Hayfield and the surrounding area to challenge the authorities in what was a momentous historical event which ultimately led to your right to roam.
The tiny village was at the centre of things then and it remains at the centre of scenic walks today. This Treasure Hunt takes you around this beautiful village to show you some of the historic buildings and sites available. It does this in a fun and challenging way with a fictitious back story about the Spanish Armada (which is something that didn't really happen of course). But, immerse yourself in this fiction and explore the village in a different way from others who will be just walking around blindly - and see if you can solve our mystery. At the same time, you will get the opportunity to explore further afield amongst the scenic countryside close to the village centre and thereby extend your pleasure and enjoyment.

This Trail is mostly along the paths and roadways of the village with one area of steeply descending steps. There is a number of pubs and other refreshment areas within the village itself and I would urge you to stop at any of them for refreshments. The Trail is approximately 1.5 miles long and should take approximately an hour and a half to complete - subject to any stops or diversions you choose to take. In the summertime there is often an opportunity to watch a game of cricket whilst relaxing by a stream.
