YOUR CASE
One of the best kept secrets is that a by-product of lime-kilning is pure silver. Workers used to hide their silver fearing the taxman and land owners would find their secret out. My Newt, the largest fishmonger in North Derbyshire, has found a treasure map inside a stuffed fish he was left by his great grandfather who used to be a limekilner. It has clues to find the hidden silver. Can you help him find the lost treasure of Bugsworth?
Bugsworth Canal Basin
Approximately 1.5 miles long which should take you about one and a half hours to complete. Bugsworth Basin is arguably the best preserved and most interesting inland port in the UK. Originally a hive of activity it is now a tranquil and relaxed site of historic interest and significance. The site has been meticulously recreated to show what industrial Britain used to look like in the late 19th century. Walking around here you get a real sense of what life might have been like for narrow boaters and their families. At the same time, the preservation work has not abandoned nature which took over the site during the forty or so years that the canal basin lay derelict and crumbling. There is a lot to see here and the site demands that you take your time to explore every nook and cranny. The Trail starts with a walk along the canal towpath before entering the canal basin. This is one of those Trails where young children can be taught so much, without even realising they are learning. Take your bikes and get them to cycle along the towpath, explore the basin and then you might want to go on a little further along the Tramway track - or just laze in the sunshine on the wide open grass areas having a picnic. A great day out, with boats galore thrown in.
Just because this route is close to open water, you should be confident that the people with you are safe around water. Aside from that though, there is virtually no traffic on this route, making cycling fun and safe. If it has been wet recently, and you are walking, you should wear appropriate clothing for slightly muddy conditions. Refreshments can be bought at Tesco's close by, or there is a pub at the basin - or why not take your own?
