YOUR CASE
Smugglers operated along the River Wye in the 18th Century. One notorious gang, the Sheep Dippers, use to hide their booty in and around Ashford in the Water. After their arrest and transportation to Australia, their ill gotten gains were lost for ever - or so we thought. A map showing their hiding place has just been discovered. Can you find their booty?
Ashford in the Water
Ashford in the Water is a pretty Derbyshire and Peak District village. The River Wye runs through the village and the Monsal Trail runs close by, making Ashford popular with both walkers and sightseers.
This 1.5mile Trail takes you through the town, revealing some interesting facts and features as it unravels. You also pass alongside and over the river, through the churchyard, the main streets and some of the side streets and small lanes before completing your circular walk. Most of the route is paved underfoot including the short sections by water, although there is a short section along a dirt path that will get muddy in winter. There are two great and historic pubs to try and a couple of cafes/tea shops to suit every taste.
Whilst light pushchairs could be taken on this Trail by those willing to tackle the occasional short rough section, we regret we are not able to recommend this to wheelchair users. This Trail is approximately 1.5 miles long and will take approximately an hour and a half to complete.
