YOUR CASE
Staveley has long been associated with wood. In the 17th century one of its most celebrated craftsmen was Woody Turner, famed for the carved red squirrel signature he hid on his furniture. The location of an almost priceless chair of Woody’s has turned up on an old map. An overseas dealer wants to be first to find it. Can you be the first to find the chair and keep it from going abroad?
STAVELEY
Staveley is a welcome haven just off the main road between Kendal and Windermere. The village is the gateway to the beautiful Kentmere Valley and the Kentmere Horseshoe. Recent years have seen a re-generation of the Staveley Wood Mill Yard, the starting and ending point for this Trail. Some of the best eating places in the area are here, the largest bike showroom, award-winning Hawkshead Brewery and an irresistible bakers can all be found in the yard, plus many other businesses specialising in locally based products.
The Trail takes you away from mill yard, where records show that a water-powered mill was on this site as early as 1135, visiting along the way St James Church, the Eagle and Child pub, St Margaret’s Tower, and much of the village often missed by visitors to Mill Yard. Explore the new riverside walk and maybe see salmon using the fish ladder, or even a kingfisher
Spend some time discovering Staveley and you will almost be sure to visit when returning to the Lakes. The village is a delight and full of surprises, set against a stunning Lakeland backdrop.
This is a very child-friendly Trail; there is even a park on the way. It is flat, mainly on pavements and well-maintained footpaths.
