YOUR CASE
Ne’er-do-well international treasure hunter Indy Hole has been spotted with his henchman Doug Deep, excavating illegally on the fells around Cockermouth. It is believed the pair has discovered a Roman treasure hoard. To lay claim to this they have had to bury the hoard at another spot. They marked the new site on a treasure map. Can you find the loot before they return and lay their hands on it?
COCKERMOUTH
Sitting just outside the boundary of the National Park, Cockermouth is the northern gateway to the Lake District. This attractive market town made the headlines in November 2009 when the rivers Derwent and Cocker overflowed. This charming market town has experienced similar incidents in the past, the townsfolk have worked long and hard to make the town a desirable place to live and visit. Visitors will be attracted and charmed by the town’s calm and its close proximity to some of the more peaceful lakes and mountains. It is not only the birth place of William and Dorothy Wordsworth; the leader of the mutiny on “The Bounty”, Fletcher Christian, and John Dalton the originator of the atomic theory both hail from the town. With a fascinating history and Georgian architecture add to that a good selection of bars and restaurants and independent shops and Cockermouth is a delightful town to explore.
This Trail is 2 miles long; it is a circular Trail, starting at the Tourist Office. The majority of the Trail is on pavements, although there is a part on a foot path next to the river. The Trail is suitable for pushchairs but unfortunately the terrain is not suitable for wheelchairs.
